Having a well maintained home at selling time can help you get the maximum value out of it. That’s why taking a little extra time to do some work around the house can make a huge difference in the future.

Luckily for you, we have prepared some winter home tips! The best part is you the homeowner can perform the majority of these tasks to save money.

  1. Make sure to check for air leaks around doors and windows – The best and easiest way to check for air leaks is by moving a lighter around the door or window to see whether or not the flame moves. If you notice something you can repair it by replacing the frame. Remember to be careful!!

  2. Outdoor furniture – When it comes to your outdoor furniture make sure it is properly cleaned, including the cushions. It is highly recommended that outdoor furniture is kept stored indoors during the winter season. If not the furniture could easily rust and cause unappealing rust stains on your deck or patio.

  3. Fireplaces should be cleaned and professionally inspected – In order to prevent chimney fires you need to properly clean your fireplace at least once a year.

  4. Proper installation in the basement and the attic – When checking the installation, look for dirty and dark sports as they can indicate air leaks.

  5. Check the snow blower and snow shovels – You need to double check your snow blower and snow shovels and determine whether or not they are in good shape. You can’t allow yourself to be in a situation where you run out of gas or something breaks right after a snowstorm.

  6. Check the heating unit – Regardless of the type of heating unit you have at your home, you need to check it and ensure that it is in working order. Call a professional if you can’t do it on your own. You don’t want it to stop working and have your pipes begin to freeze!

  7. Insulate the pipes – Any types of pipes that are exposed should be insulated. If you notice anything else that needs to be protected from the cold, make sure to purchase a suitable covering. If pipes were to burst do to the temperature change, not only will you have to fix the piping, but mold could develop from the moisture.

  8. Keep containers of gas for the generator – If you have a gas-powered generator, make sure to have containers of gas stored away. The gas should be stored in an outside storage unit or in a garage. Also, ensure the generator is working properly.
